A must-see slideshow!

I had not heard of Amy Deputy before this morning, when I saw this link posted to a slide show on a photography forum.  This slide show reminds me why so many of us are compelled to photograph and why those photographs are so prized.  It always amazes me how emotionally involved an image can propell me into a strangers life.

She has many wonderful quotes in the show, but this one stopped me in my tracks.

In your light I learn how to love

In your beauty how to make poems

You dance inside my chest where no one sees you

But sometimes I do and that becomes this Art.

I hope you enjoy the show.

Back Bay Engagement Session

Jessica & James are getting married next month at the White Mountain Hotel in Conway, New Hampshire.  They wanted to do their engagement photos in Boston’s Back Bay. It’s so fun to mix it up and get into the city to photograph for a change.

Love to hear your comments!!

New England Green Vendors

Are you interested in planning a New England green wedding?  Last week, I had the wonderful opportunity to do a promotional photo session for New England green wedding vendors at Beaver Brook in Hollis, New Hampshire.

Their stuff is top notch!  Green Stem Designs did a beautiful job with local, in season flowers, blossoming branches, even local lettuce.

SEAMS of Wenham MA. made a beautiful hemp wedding dress.

Harper of SEAMS also made a wedding dress made from a reclaimed table cloth.

The Hippie Chick Bakery donated an organic, vegan wedding cake.

And Jennifer Horne of Pure enV is the green wedding planner who put it all together.

I’d love to hear your ideas of how to green your wedding and if you know of any other local vendors specializing in green weddings, I would love to know about them!!

Happy Earth Day

It has a busy couple of weeks here, but I wanted to make sure I left an Earth Day post.

This has been a big year for the Earth in the photography world.  Dawn Tacker and I launched Greener Photography this past Sept. and it has rapidly grown to an organization of almost 400 photographers who want reduce the impact photography has on the environment.

In fact, we’ve grown so fast, we had to stop accepting new members while we developed our Greener Photography Certification standards. This is the first of it’s kind in photography.  It will take the guess work out of knowing if a photography studio is green enough to call them self a green business.  It’s going to be fantastic!!

I’ve also re-written my environmental policy this year:

  • We print double-sided on re-used and/or recycled paper.
  • We refuse, reduce, re-use, recycle anything possible.
  • We practice water waste and energy conservation.
  • We offer discounts on our services for clients who choose other green vendors.
  • We are actively seeking alternative printing methods and are pressuring the industry to print photographs on recycled fiber paper with soy inks.
  • We offer press printed  cards and photos on 100 percent PCW recycled paper from a press powered by wind energy.

I’ve been toying with some other ideas, such as planting a tree for every child we photograph.  But I would love to hear from you!

What would you like to see a photography studio doing for the environment or for our clients?  I welcome you ideas!!

Feel free to email me or leave your comments below.

Happy Earth Day!

Career Day at Kearsarge Regional Middle School

My commercial photographer friend, Charley Freiberg and I were invited back to Kearsarge Regional Middle School for another year of career day.  Guess we didn’t scare them off last year.

We have a bit of a routine now.  They have questions they have to ask, like did you go to school to do what you do and how much money do you make?

We tell them they don’t need to go to school (although both of us did) and the teachers cringe.  Then we tell them we don’t do it for the money we work for quality of life.

I don’t think they get that part, but I think it’s important to say anyway.  When did making a living become a monetary value anyway?  I enjoy the life I live, but I don’t make much money.

I also tell them how good it feels to get that perfect shot and they seem to get that.  I get paid in perfect shots, I suppose.

Then we do the photoshoot, which is the real reason they show up.

It was great fun!!  Hope to do this every year!  Until a student comes back as a client.  That has to be the cut off.

We’ve been published!

Who has heard of Portovert?  It’s the only magazine dedicated to green weddings.

I knew I’d really made a mark for myself as a green wedding photographer when Portovert’s editors contacted me for photos of real green weddings for a new feature section on their site.

They chose to feature Jill and James’ botanical garden wedding. They thought it was a clever way of having a tropical wedding in November.

Not only did their selection cut down on the need for decorations, it also eliminated the carbon emissions and pollution caused by floral transportation.

Does anyone know of any other greenhouses that host weddings?

I know the Common Man’s Italian Farm house hosts weddings in their greenhouse, but I don’t think it’s a working greenhouse.  Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I’d love to know of others!

Yelena & Pat

How many of you remember what a beautiful day last Saturday was?  Perfect, sunny, warm Spring day….until about 4 o’clock.

It was exactly as the clouds rolled in that Yelena, Pat and I headed down to the Charles River for some classic Boston bridge photos.  Well wind, cold and gray is what we got.

Despite that the photos look quite good.  I’d love to hear your comments below!

Little Liam

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of visiting Karen, Hugh and their newborn Liam at their house in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.

I’ve never photographed another newborn who made so much eye contact before.

Do you think he has modeling in his future?
